Training at Bala

We have an extensive range of training programmes at the club some formal, others less so. All of the courses are great fun regardless of the weather! Our training team has a wide range of skills and experience, and all of our formal courses are accredited with the RYA.

Club Open Days

Our Club Open Days are aimed to introduce you to the fantastic world of sailing. It is an excellent opportunity for beginners to try out something new and keep active! Our friendly and confident members will provide you with a fun and active sailing session, equipping you with basic sailing skills and manoeuvres out on the water. Children are welcome too, the day is designed to suit the whole family.

Learn To Sail Courses

These certificated courses teach you to sail to RYA Level 2 or Young Sailor Scheme Level 3.

Course 1 (4 days adults only) 4 consecutive Saturdays3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th May 2025
Course 2 (4 days adults only) 2 consecutive weekends5th, 6th, 12th, 13th July 2025
Course 3 (3 days youth only) 3 consecutive days5th, 6th & 7th August 2025

Cost: £225 (Adults) and £170 (Youth). This also includes full membership of Bala Sailing Club for the remainder of the current season.

All course days must be completed to gain your qualification.

Powerboat Training (Club members only, aged 18+)

Our power boat drivers are a key part of safety and race management at the club.

Powerboat Course Level 2

Powerboat level 2 is a two-day course run over two weekends and is open to club members over the age of eighteen years. Members must have the PB2 qualification in order to drive the clubs RIBs. The course covers basic boat checks, pre-launch checks and basic powerboat handling skills at both low and high speed.

Safety Boat Course

The Safety Boat course is a two-day course and is open to club members who have held a PB2 qualification for at least one full season. The course builds on PB2 skills when providing safety cover for dinghies, windsurfers and canoes at events and regattas. Safety equipment, race management, crew communication and rescue techniques.

First Aid Course

This First Aid course follows the RYA syllabus and is designed to provide a practical working knowledge of First Aid for all sailors and those driving Power Boats. It meets the requirements for RYA Dinghy, Windsurfing, Sportsboat and Cruising Instructors.

A copy of the latest edition of the First Aid Manual forms the course syllabus and is included in the course fee. A copy can be collected on the day of the course. 

The RYA First Aid course is structured to include in greater detail points relevant to sailing, i.e. hypothermia, drowning and treating injuries in a confined space.

Racing Officer Skills Training

Whilst we do not offer RYA Syllabus Race Officer courses, we are always keen to upskill the knowledge of our members who would like to be able to support club racing and build a foundation for them to maybe go on to follow the RYA program

For 2025, we have arranged a number of courses which are free to club members of a first come basis. Click in the linked dates below to book your places.

Mark Laying  this session will be mainly hands on out on the water, learning the different methods of laying marks and how to quickly retrieve and reposition them under the direction of the Race Office. It is open to both PB2 Rib drivers and Safety boat assistants.

Date  Saturday 6th April

Basic principles of Race Officer  this session will guide members thought the clubs race bridge and then take you through the flag sequencing, start procedure, OCS procedures and shortened course process. An overview of how to finish both handicap racing and pursits will give you everything you need to start supporting club racing

Date  Saturday 29th March and Saturday 26th April

Supporting club and class opens  Running and managing either a club open or a visiting class open is a big step up from club racing. With a need to increase our capability in this area, this course will start someone with a basic understanding of Race Officer craft to initially support opens as an Assistant Race Officer and to hopefully grow your skills forward
